Jane Bevan creates sculptures and vessels using found, natural materials which she gathers on daily walks in local woodlands. They range from silver birch bark, hawthorn and sycamore seeds, thorns and twigs, to feathers and acorn cups. These materials are often trodden on and discarded despite the wealth of colour, pattern and texture they offer. She carefully selects her materials and then uses traditional techniques of tying, stitching, twining, coiling and binding to make small sculptures and vessels. She works from her home studio in Derbyshire and takes her inspiration and materials from the local countryside.
After a twenty-five year career in museums she returned to Derby University on the Crafts programme and graduated in 2011 with first class honours and the University Purchase prize.
She is now practising as an artist taking part in exhibitions, craft fairs and festivals nationwide.
