Mary Stephens works from a small studio at her home in Herefordshire, making fine thrown domestic ware and sculptures in stoneware and porcelain. She says, ‘When designing and throwing I try to keep my work simple, elegant and a pleasure to use. I often part glaze the pieces to allow the contrast between the fired clay and glaze to create a subtle form of decoration. I also use smoke firing techniques to produce a natural individual patterning on some work.’
She grew up in Herefordshire and completed her BA (Hons) Fine Art from Bretton Hall College in 1997. After her degree she returned to Herefordshire to train as potter at Pembridge Terracotta, then went on to train as an Early Years Teacher. Within the last year she has focused on her studio practice, developing designs and work of her own.
